【World Small Hydropower Development Report 2022】

2025/03/28

Millions of people around the world still lack stable access to sustainable energy and clean water resources. Small hydropower provides an affordable, environmentally friendly, and socio-economically beneficial solution. It not only promotes the adoption of renewable energy but also creates job opportunities, supports the growth of small businesses, and contributes to addressing climate change.

As of 2022, only 36% of the global small hydropower potential had been developed, with a significant portion of untapped resources remaining, particularly in developing countries. To facilitate policy-making and investment, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the International Center on Small Hydro Power (IC-SHP) have jointly released the World Small Hydropower Development Report (WSHPDR).

In 2022, the global installed capacity of small hydropower (below 10MW) reached 79 GW, marking an approximately 1% increase compared to 2019. Although its overall share is not large, small hydropower has played a crucial role in improving people's lives, as explored in 12 case studies.

Small hydropower is a key technology for promoting sustainable energy development and regional economic growth, with significant potential for future expansion.
